With the change to cooler weather, the zinnias have taken on deep, luxuriant hues of color. They seem to be relieved the heat has finally ended, and show it with new levels of vibrance. I’m not a big fan of red or orange flowers, and will always go for pinks or purples. But today, they captured my attention as they seemed giddy and laughing in color.
It’s a shame that within a few short weeks, the frost will take them. But isn’t that really the essence of fall – going out in a blaze of glory?
The tomatoes too, are giving it one last hurray, and will make a nice pot of chili this weekend.
It is interesting, that the colder temps end tomato production, but revive the zinnias to their most vibrant colors of the season.
I’m hanging onto summer every single day I can. But if I must leave summer behind, hot bowls of chili, mixed candy corn and peanuts, and vibrant red and orange zinnias is not such a bad way to start October.

I love that you mixed in the zinnias with your tomatoes and even candy corn. Orange isn’t my favorite color either but it does make a statement.

I rarely showcase an orange or red plant and rarely even allow them in my garden. But those zinnias were so vibrant and I couldn’t resist them.
