This week’s bouquet is made of what is fast becoming one of my favorite colors, acid green. The “Green Envy” zinnias are really stunning, despite our continuous extreme heat and lack of rain.
Gathered with a couple herbs and the lettuce, which is ready to bolt, the zinnias are actually the only flower in the bouquet.
I though the lettuce would compliment the other greens, give a different texture, and be a nice way to fill out the vase to give it a fuller finished look.
With all its voluptuous curves, lettuce adds a lovely sensuous look to the vase. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold up for very long.
And I had to add my favorite summer herb, dill, not only for fragrance and eating, but also flower arranging.
The arrangement still wasn’t quite as full as I wanted and seemed to be lacking something. I went back out to the garden to gather more dill and zinnias, but came across another herb that has a delicate, airy flower. Don’t ask me it’s name as I’m drawing a complete blank, and couldn’t find the marker. Maybe one of you can kindly educate me.
Although everything is green, each participant brings its own unique shape, color, and texture.
Together, they make a lovely soft summer statement, and I think maybe my favorite bouquet of the year so far.

I love your choice of vase materials, all so light and fresh and the staging is exquisite! Beautiful.
Cindy says
Thank you Susie! I love all the textures in it, each one complimenting the other. As it sits on my screened-in porch, it adds such a light refreshing look to the whole room, which is also in those colors.

Magazine Front cover picture to be sure. You were inspired and in the zone when you went out cutting. I shall look at my lettuces which are about to bolt in quite a different light. Could the herb be marjoram?
Cindy says
How kind of you Noelle! Many thanks! I loved the lettuce in the arrangement too, but sadly, it only held up for about an hour. I would have expected more of it than that since once it is cut, it holds up longer than that for a salad.
Cindy says
I don’t know if it is marjoram. Could be, since I only buy the basic herbs, but I planted it a few years ago, so I really don’t know. I’ll have to compare the leaves with a photo.
Cindy Coghill says
You were right Noelle. It is marjoram. Thank you.

What a joy! So cool and still colourful in a quiet way. I love it! Clever you – and what a feast you must have in your garden to produce that delightful collection! Hooray! Amanda https://therunningwave.blogspot.com/2020/07/two-summer-vases-on-monday.html
Cindy says
Thanks Amanda. I’m surprised the lettuce has lasted this long, considering we’ve had such extreme heat for 3 weeks. My only wish is that it would have lasted longer in the vase. It only held up for about an hour 🙁
Cathy says
Oh that is lovely – what an inspired decision to use lettuce to accompany the zinnia, with the herbs to augment the greenness further. A delight!
Cindy says
Thank you Cathy. It is an arrangement that for some reason pleases me more than lots of color. Maybe because it’s different.
Amelia Grant says
Dreamy images and the colors and textures are just lovely.
Cindy Coghill says
Thank you Amelia. I think it just might be my favorite creation. There are so many beautiful shades of green to work with.
Kris Peterson says
Beautiful! I love arrangement comprised of analogous colors so this one is right up my alley. The unidentified herb has me thinking oregano.
Cindy Coghill says
Thank you Kris. It just might be oregano as I only buy the more common, generic herbs. I suppose I didn’t help identification of it by just showing the flowers and not the leaves. I’ll have to check it out. I know I used to know what it was, but the older I get, the less I remember names of flowers, which is really okay with me. I was never into all their botanical names anyways.
Cathy says
Ooh, lovely! I am soexcited seeing this as my new Green Envy cone flower is just opening! I love the idea of using lettuce and herbs in a vase. 😃 What a glorious creation! Well done Cindy. I love it!
Cindy Coghill says
I got the name wrong on the zinnia. It is just “Envy”, but I bet the echinacea by that name will be very close to the same color. It is a strange color for a flower, but very pretty, I think. I like the idea of using lettuce, but it only held up for about an hour which was a big disappointment since it added so much to the overall arrangement. I later had to pull it out as it became very limp.
